Focus Areas

To accomplish the large goal of bringing the renaissance to 1st Street, our team is sectioned into focus groups based on skill set and interest.

Fundraising/Grants

Fundraising: The overall goal of the fundraising team is to raise money to help purchase supplies for the First Street Project. With better funding we will be able to better assist our community. We are currently in the process of organizing a benefit concert in the First Street community.

Grants: In an attempt to raise funds and support for the project we are writing grants and developing community partnerships. Donation opportunities include sponsoring seeds, soil, or gardens. All of our sponsors and community partner will receive recognition throughout the neighborhood through visual representation.

Raised Beds

The main goal of the raised beds is to provide the people on 1st Street with a means to grow food for both the community and to sell. The majority of the beds are going to be built by Victory Garden Initiative, while the rest are going to be built by the community and our group. While the majority of the beds are for the purpose of growing food for the community, any surplus produce will be sold to aid in the restoration of the Masonic Temple, the adjacent playground, and the surrounding area in general.

Communal Area//

On the corner of N. 1st Milwaukee Street and E. Center Street is a space that holds a lot of promise. At first glance, it appears to be an abandoned space with overgrown trees and shrubbery, but to our group, it’s an opportunity to benefit the community. Our goal is to clean up the space and make it more inviting. We want to bring the community together in a space that is otherwise wasted due to lack of use. Through partnerships, grants, and fundraising, we hope to incorporate trees, perennials, seating areas, and more in efforts to create long-lasting improvements that the whole community can utilize and appreciate.

Temple and Playground

Temple: Our team is working to make the house next to the temple into a space which can be used to house gardening supplies and as a community space. We hope to make the interior of the house into an area to store books, games, and food from the garden. With the help of students from the University of Milwaukee, we hope to decorate the outside of the house with a mural.

Playground: As the playground group we have a focus on improving the quality of the playground area next to the temple. This means that we will be trying to either “fix up” or replace the existing playground equipment as well as add to it.
